Program Overview
This 6-day travel course will provide students with in-person study experiences at museums, galleries and other modern and contemporary art spaces in New York City and the greater New York area. It has been scheduled for early summer 2026 to allow a visit to this year’s Whitney Biennial; the itinerary also includes a side trip to visit Princeton University’s newly constructed art museum (designed by Adjaye Associates) and to view the exhibition Photography as a Way of Life. We’ll attend selected major museums as a group, and then you’ll have structured options to explore additional venues (and the city itself) in smaller groups.

Program Highlights
  • Attend a major showcase for cutting-edge contemporary art
  • Gain familiarity with world-class museum collections
  • Observe and reflect on collecting and curatorial practices at major art institutions, along with recent architectural trends among museums
  • Build knowledge of the cultural landscape and creative economy of New York City
Instructor Information

Brendan Fay, Ph.D. teaches courses in modern and contemporary art history. He joined the School of Art and Design at Eastern Michigan University in 2015, and his recent seminars have studied the Bauhaus and its legacy in the United States, the emergence of performance art, and the evolution of Detroit’s contemporary art scene. A Michigan native and University of Michigan alumnus, Dr. Fay completed his dissertation on photography and abstraction at Harvard University, and subsequently held a postdoctoral Mellon Fellowship in the Humanities at Stanford University. His primary research examines issues related to modernism and photographic education in the United States; additional research interests include problems of abstraction and materiality in contemporary photography, along with aspects of performance, sound and new media. His writing has appeared in History of PhotographyArtforumExposure and the online publication Infinite Mile.

Professor Fay has decades of familiarity and intimate knowledge of the museums and collections on this itinerary, including past residence in NYC and employment and research at museums there; he is also the curator of the exhibition to be viewed at the Princeton University Art Museum. He has co-lead department travel to museums in Chicago multiple times since 2015.
