International Service Learning for Social Workers

Bluefields Jamaica

Term  Winter Break
Course(s): SWKE 456 or SWKE 556
Credits: Three
Eligibility:   Must be a social work major and at least 18 years old. SWRK 251 is a pre-requisite to this course unless you have been admitted to the M.S.W. program.
Program Fee: See budget
This program requires a personal interview prior to being accepted. Interview rounds will take place during November.   

Program Overview

Use your Winter Break to volunteer and complete a unique service learning experience in the rural fishing village of Bluefields, Jamaica. You'll experience the culture and food of the region while working with the local population. In addition to daily volunteer work in the local community you'll participate in several day excursions including a visit to a local plantation and ecological preserve.

Program Highlights
  • Discover YS Falls with seven waterfalls cascading into natural pools
  • Conduct community surveys with local residents
  • Learn about local community groups
On-Campus Meeting Dates
There will be several mandatory on-campus meeting dates prior to the departure of this trip. Dates will be provided upon acceptance to the program.

Instructor Information
Professor David ManvilleClaudette Braxton, the Field Coordinator and Part-time Lecturer in EMU's School of Social Work, and Caren Knight will be coordinating the service learning for students while abroad on this program.
