Program Overview
EMU's exchange program with JLU Giessen enables undergraduate students to take classes for a semester or year alongside German students. As an exchange student you'll have the opportunity to join student organizations and participate in various excursions hosted by the university.

Students are offered the opportunity to enroll in an additional intensive German language course that runs the 3–4 weeks prior to Winter semester. In addition to language courses, JLU Giessen offers a range of courses in the fields of law, business and economics, physical and social sciences, and humanities. All coursework may be applied to your academic major, minor or general education requirements with approval from the appropriate departments. Review possible course options available for exchange students.

Housing and Meals
Exchange students are provided a place in JLU's student hall of residence. You will apply for this during the secondary application process for JLU Giessen. Students typically get a single occupancy fully furnished room, but you'll need to supply your own bed linens, towels and kitchen utensils. Kitchens and bathrooms are shared with other students.

Visa Requirements
U.S. citizens are not required to have a visa for entry into Germany. However, students will need to apply for a residence title upon arrival. JLU will assist students with this process.

Application and Advising Notes
Students are required to attend an advising session before applying to this program. You must also meet with the German department for approval on the appropriate level of German to be taken at JLU. Please email Dr. Carla Damiano at cdamiano@emich.edu for more information or to set up an advising appointment about this program.

This program requires a dual application process in which both EMU and JLU Giessen must approve students to participate. You will receive notification to complete the JLU application upon approval from EMU.

Financial Aid and Scholarships
Financial aid and many EMU scholarships may be applied to the tuition and fees for this approved program. Visit the Office of Financial Aid for more information on how to use your financial aid and scholarships to help cover the costs of studying abroad. Find information on national and EMU scholarships specifically for students that wish to study abroad at emich.edu/abroad/financialaid/scholarships.

*Students must have completed at least one semester at EMU within the last 12 months and be in good academic standing to be eligible to apply for semester/year programs.
