Overview
EMU's exchange program with Kansai Gaidai University offers undergraduate students the opportunity to take classes for a semester alongside other international and Japanese students. As an exchange student in the Asian Studies Program at KGU you can also participate in university cultural events, clubs, international festivals, the Speaking Partner program and local home visits.

KGU offers students a broad range of courses taught in English that are relevant to Japan and Asia in the social sciences, humanities, studio arts and business. The Asian Studies Program offers seven different levels of Japanese language instruction and does not require previous language experience. All coursework may be applied to your academic major, minor or general education requirements with approval from the appropriate departments. Review possible course options. All students are required to take Japanese language courses. Japanese majors at EMU are required to enroll in the full eight credits of language per semester to satisfy the JPNE 490 requirement.

Housing and Meals
KGU has suspended homestay housing opportunities starting in 2023 until further notice. COVID-19 cases have increased again in Japan, and the strict quarantine requirements cause students in homestays who have been exposed to someone in the home to follow the same strict quarantine.

KGU offers exchange students two options for housing: homestay or dormitories. For more information, please click here. Please see the budget to learn more about how billing works for housing and meals.

Visa Requirements
Japan requires you to obtain a student visa before arrival. A certificate of eligibility will be completed at the time of application and sent to you by KGU prior to departure. Be aware that you may be required to obtain your visa in-person from the nearest consulate. Please refer to the link below for more information regarding obtaining your visa.

Application Notes
This program requires a dual application process in which both EMU and KGU must approve students to participate. You will receive notification to complete the KGU application upon approval from EMU.

Financial Aid and Scholarships
Financial aid and many EMU scholarships may be applied to the tuition and fees for this approved program. Visit the Office of Financial Aid for more information on how to use your financial aid and scholarships to help cover the costs of studying abroad.

*Students must have completed at least one semester at EMU within the last 12 months and be in good academic standing to be eligible to apply for semester/year programs.
