Program Overview
Explore Japan during through an intensive language immersion program located right off the coast of Lake Biwa. Practice Japanese with conversation partners, participate in club activities and events at local universities, and engage in weekly cultural activities right on JCMU's campus. As a student in this program you'll be able to participate in cultural excursions to learn more about daily life in Japan and explore the Kansai region. JCMU's language and culture program offers beginning through advanced Japanese.

Academic Credit

Intensive Japanese (10 Credits): Daily instruction will address listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Beginner through advanced levels are all offered. Placement is based on exams at the beginning of the program.

Housing and Meals
JCMU offers students accommodations in either residence hall apartments or a home stay. Student apartments are designed for double occupancy, each with a private bedroom/study and shared kitchen and bathroom. Students are responsible for their own meals when they stay in the apartments.

Students participating in a home stay will have a private bedroom in the home. Two meals a day, breakfast and dinner, will be provided by the host family. Students are responsible for lunch and additional snacks.

Visa Requirements
Japan only requires students from the U.S. that are participating in programs longer than 90 days to get a student visa. If you are in a program that meets this requirement your Cultural Activities (semester) or Student (full year) visa will be processed through the JCMU office at Michigan State University. Post-acceptance materials that are listed on the online application will be used to file for visas. International students studying at Eastern Michigan University interested in this program should check if there are additional visa requirements. Learn more.

Application and Advising Notes
This program requires a dual application process in which both EMU and JCMU must approve students to participate. Students are required to attend an advising session as part of the application process.

Financial Aid and Scholarships
Eligible students can apply for other JCMU sponsored scholarships when available on the JCMU homepage. Financial aid and EMU scholarships can be applied to the tuition and fees for this program. Additional scholarships available for EMU students that wish to study abroad can be found through the
