Program Overview
This course introduces students to key social issues in Ireland and an opportunity to compare systems to the U.S. using a social justice lens. Focusing on mental health and poverty, students will learn about the historical and current forces that impact the policies and systems in both countries.

Ireland and the United States’ social welfare systems share similarities as they are both rooted in the English Poor Laws. There are also many differences due to the complex history and cultural differences in each country. This winter intersession course will explore two social welfare systems, mental health and poverty. Through discussions, lectures, and daily excursions in the cities of Dublin and Limerick, students will gain insight into the history of the social welfare systems that address mental health and poverty in Ireland and extend this understanding to present policies and programs. Resources provided before the trip and discussions during the trip will compare these systems to the United States.

Social work students are better prepared to serve the needs of the individuals with whom they work when they have a clearer understanding and appreciation of the diverse backgrounds of these individuals. As the purpose of the social work profession is guided by a global perspective and respect for human diversity (CSWE, 2022), this study abroad experience is an opportunity for students to further their understanding of this unique diversity in a global context as they travel to a different country.
