JCMU is committed to providing programs that allow students to create meaningful intercultural experiences while participating in academic studies of the highest calibre. JCMU strives to be affordable for students of every background, regardless of training or experience, while providing access to a diverse selection of academic and intercultural activities. Participants from colleges and universities worldwide are welcome.

The Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU) is a study abroad program born of a desire to build and strengthen relationships between Japanese, Americans, and people of every nationality. JCMU's programs give students the opportunity to study language and culture on the shore of Lake Biwa while participating in the community of the City of Hikone, Shiga Prefecture, Japan, where the center is located.

Founded September 1988 on the 20th anniversary of the sister-state relationship between Shiga Prefecture and the State of Michigan, JCMU symbolizes the bond between the two political bodies. However, the institution's goal of connection and exchange is not limited to students from these areas. People of all backgrounds, majors, and levels of experience are welcome to participate.

Summer Short Programs (May)
JCMU offers 2- or 3- week programs in summer (May) exploring other topics in Japan. These programs change each year and students should go directly to their website to learn more about the current offerings. Below are some options offered in the past and might be offered again. Click here to see current JCMU programs.

Teaching English in Japan
Observe various English language classrooms in Japan while learning about Japanese culture and society. No prior Japanese language study is required for this program. Students enrolled in this program will take a TESOL Methods Course (3 credits). You will participate in a course focusing on national and international approaches to ESL teaching while observing various ESL classrooms and settings. Rather than merely studying about TESOL methods from a textbook though, you will have the opportunity to actually travel to and observe various English language classrooms both at JCMU and at local schools! While taking this course, you will gain a deeper understanding of the characteristics and needs of ESL education in Japan, providing you with practical skills and knowledge for a career in TESOL. This experience will be especially useful if you are planning on teaching English in Japan on the JET program (or other similar teaching opportunities) in the future.

Religion and Society in Japan
This program will explore the variety of ways in which “religion” pervades and functions in Japan today. Together, we will explore “religion” in society, especially the different roles that it plays for various communities within a web of socio-economic, ethnic, caste, and other diversities. This program will explore the variety of ways in which “religion” pervades and functions in Japan today. We will begin by appreciating how the concept of religion (in the sense of a religious tradition) has never fit easily in Japan, and will adopt a more flexible approach to observing diverse ritual behaviors, modes of self-cultivation, community bonds, and means of value transmission that may or may not be labeled “religious.” Together, we will explore “religion” in society, especially the different roles that it plays for various communities within a web of socio-economic, ethnic, caste, and other diversities. By also focusing on social and ethnic diversity in Japan, students’ will gain a broader view beyond the clunky concept “religion,” to understand the variety of ways in humans organize their societies, minds, emotions, bodies, and communities.

Business Communications in Japan Keystone Course
Students will experience firsthand the Japanese culture and business practices and see how various organizations operating in traditional and modern spaces do business in a fast-paced and changing environment. Students will have the opportunity to learn about communication processes, create dialogue, build interpersonal relationships, communicate in groups and teams, and speak to public audiences, including those aspects unique to Japanese culture. Broadly, the course aims to enhance students’ understanding of other cultures and their appreciation of cultural diversity for various communication applications.
