ESL Teacher Mentorship Program in Slovakia

Eligibility: 
This program is intended for a professional working in the field of ESL who would like to gain experience acting as a mentor on EMU's faculty-led study abroad program in Slovakia. For eligibility, the applicant must
  • have ESL Endorsement
  • be currently employed as a K-12 teacher in Michigan

The ESL Mentor will assist with the ESL program described below:
This course engages teacher candidates in thinking deeply about educators’ roles in developing their own and their learners’ global competencies and global citizenship. Teachers candidates will have an opportunity to examine models of global citizenship education and learn about the importance of key global competencies. They will have an opportunity to apply their knowledge in an international, community-based teaching project.

Teacher candidates will examine TESOL teachers’ roles in delivering locally and globally relevant instruction in response to UNESCO’s Sustainable Development Goals, and the value of critical global citizenship education that aims to increase  youth’s self-actualization, emancipation, and participation in democratic practices.

Teacher candidates will deliver instruction in English to Slovak English learners in ways that are globally, culturally, and linguistically responsive. They will use context-appropriate communication strategies when interacting with a variety of diverse students, parents, community stakeholders.

  • Develop and implement an intensive English institute to English learners in a Banská Bystrica, Slovakia;
  • Increase your cultural awareness and deepen understanding of diverse English learner needs;
  • Explore the natural beauty of Banská Bystrica, Slovakia by visiting local towns, mountains, and national parks.
Instructor Information
Zuzana Tomaš, Ph.D. is a Professor at EMU who has taught graduate and undergraduate English as a second language (ESLN) courses for international students and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) teacher preparation courses. Dr. Tomaš has also worked with in-service teachers and university faculty through various professional development workshops and seminars in the United States, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, China, and Syria.
